We by Yevgeny Zamyatin is a groundbreaking dystopian novel set in a rigidly controlled future society called OneState, where individuality is suppressed and citizens exist as numbered units under constant surveillance. Written decades before 1984 and Brave New World, Zamyatin's visionary work is widely regarded as the foundational text of the dystopian genre, profoundly influencing the great anti-totalitarian novels that followed.

The novel explores themes of individuality, totalitarian control, freedom versus security, and the dangers of a society that sacrifices personal identity for mathematical order and collective conformity. Through the story of D-503, a loyal citizen whose rigid worldview begins to crack after he falls in love, Zamyatin delivers a chilling critique of authoritarianism and mechanized existence that remains strikingly relevant today. Its poetic, fragmented prose style and prescient political vision have cemented its place as a masterwork of speculative fiction.
